avatar most expensive movie everAvatar which is the film masterminded by Jim (Titanic) Cameron is due out in December with an estimated production budget of $230m which could possibly be even higher if the contributions of Cameron’s and other financial backers are factored in.

Add in the cost of how much Fox plans to spend on global marketing for Avatar, another $150m, and you have a film that, in theory may have cost about $500m into get in the theaters, which means that Fox must be pretty sure that it is going to be a success.

This is not unknown for in studio economics, because most studios are willing to go all out for a film such as Avatar that is produced by a big name director, and promises to be a mega blockbuster.

Instead, the studios get as much marketing and financial support for a film as possible, and then push the film as far as possible.

In the case of Avatar, most of the financial backing came from Ingenious Media and Dune Entertainment with Cameron acting as a backup since he agreed to defer some of his payout if production costs for the studio went over $300m.

Not that charitable, when you consider he did the same thing with Titanic and reaped the financial rewards when the movie became the biggest of all time.

The films budget got a little break since a great deal of its digital work was completed in New Zealand where it qualified for tax rebates.

It also got about $25m in aid from Panasonic who agreed to toss in some funds in exchange for assistance in marketing their upcoming 3D home systems.

James Cameron has definately made another winner this time. Avatar is brilliant, and although the actual plot is a bit rehashed, the movie experience more than makes up for this. Will we see a sequel? I hope so :)
