The latest film by Lars Von Trier, Antichrist, is as might be expected covered in dark overtones beginning with its opening scene that are in black and white as Willem Dafoe testes are shown and a young infant dies.
From this point viewers that are easily disturbed may want to leave because as the film progresses the film only grows into darker tones.
Antichrist is based around the story of Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsburg who are referred to throughout the film only as He and She. The couple then traveled to a cabin in the woods in a place called Eden, to deal with despair that arises from the death of a young child.
He becomes detached in order to deal with the death, while she becomes emotionally distressed and becomes obsessed with sex and masturbation.
As the couple works through their emotions in the woods several bizarre events begin to occur that feature among many things genital mutilation.
Both Dafoe and Gainsbourg’s performances invoke a sense of awe as they throw themselves completely into their roles, and in the case of Gainsbourg expose a lot of skin as well.
Throughout the compelling story there are plenty of overtones that lead to discussion afterwards including symbols of fear, faith, and religion.
