Sherlock Holmes feels like the new 007, trailer, review

While most do not consider Sherlock Holmes an action hero, if you can wrap your mind around the idea you may just enjoy the new film remake of fiction’s famous detective as played by Robert Downey Jr.

Holmes has not been on the silver screen, unless you count the 80’s terrible outing by Peter O’Toole, since the 70’s, but the old character is poised for a comeback that many film critics predict will be massive.

This time around director Guy (shoot everyone in the room) Ritchie and the films screenwriting team of Anthony Peckham, Michael Robert Johnson, and Simon Kinberg have decided to make Holmes a manic depressive, who prefers masculinity over intellectual pursuits, willing to brandish some weapons that might make Holmes purists outraged.

Of course, given Downey’s image as a strong character actor capable of playing dark action roles; his portrayal of Holmes in the director’s image is spot on and intriguing to watch.  At the same time, while carrying his brawn on his shoulder, literally, he is able to keep his dialogue sharp and quick tongued reminding others that despite Holmes new smarmy character he is quite intelligent.

Outside of the mystery set before Holmes, he also has a James Bond moment undermining his partner Watson’s finance.  At the same time he also has a Batman moment facing a female master criminal that has managed to outsmart him twice throughout the past with secret intentions.

Finally, if this is not enough to keep you glued to your seat, the score by Hans Zimmer will be as it helps propel the narrative and adds color to the entire movie.
