NY and LA critics select Hurt Locker as best movie, trailerThe New York Film Critics Circle announced that the best film recipient was “The Hurt Locker” an Iraqi war drama.

Additionally, the group also announced that Kathryn Bigelow from “The Hurt Locker” won the best director award. The choices aligned with the choices of the LA Film Critics Association which were announced a day earlier on Sunday.

New York critics chose Meryl Streep as its best actress award for her role in “Julia & Julia” which totals up to four awards for her.

George Clooney took the award for best actress for his work in “Up in the Air” as well as “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” Additionally, Mr. Fox the movie won the award for the best animated film.

Best supporting actor went to Christoph Waltz for his portrayal of a Nazi in “Inglorious Bastards” and Mo’Nique took the award for best actress for her role in “Precious.”

The New York Film Critics Circle Awards are just one of the many prizes that are precursors to the official Academy Awards that land on March 7th. The nominations for the Academy’s will be handed out on Feb. 2nd.

Avatar does not stand to do as well with the Academy Awards as many predict after it did not receive any awards from the NYFCC although the online version of the group gave it the nod for best picture.

The awards from the NYFCC will be handed out on January 11th by the 33 metro area critics that compose it.
