Hilary Swank is a method actor, which is why after her latest film Amelia was slated for production she jumped into a plane and decided to learn how to fly.
Swank stated that it would wrong to play Amelia Earhart without knowing how to fly herself. Her enthusiasm may also be due to the fact that, like Earhart, she loves a good challenge, which it turns out her lessons were.
Swank said that she never realized how much work it takes to learn how to fly and compared the calculations to an old calculus class. She said that even though she does not typically sweat a lot, after landing from a two hour lesson she would be drenched due to the hard work it took while in the air.
Her plan’s were to complete her final exam and get a pilot’s license before the movie started filming, but in order to do so she was required to fly solo and the film’s insurers put their foot down, due to the fact she was the most valuable part of the film. Now that the film is due to open this Friday she is free to complete her course.
She says she plans on obtaining her license now, stating that she likes to complete what she starts and that she cannot wait to get up on her own and get a pilot’s license.
Swank went on to state that she is grateful for all the perks she has had since becoming an actress, and that learning to fly as a result of a movie is not such a bad trade off.
Swank also stated that she has a lot of empathy for her character based on the real Earhart, because as a child she also set goals from a very young age even though some of them like being an actor, have not always been easy to obtain.
