With a top grossing movie of all time on the roster and the world economy coming out of the recession, it is only reasonable to think that the Academy Awards was going to be a red carpet showcase for all types of fashion statements making the latest fashion news spread like wildfire across the internet, and last night certaily did not disappoint.
One particular statement was the appearance of the shade of blue that can best be described as ‘Avatar’ blue worn by best actress winner Mo’Nique with a panache, Gabourey Sidibe, and director of Avatar, James Cameron’s wife.
However, compared to some of the more flavorful fashion statements of the night the Avatar shade was pretty tame. For instance, Vera Farmiga from ‘Up in the Air’ chose to wear a magenta gown that was a mix of ruffles and slinky material that hugged her body at just the right places to let the outrageous ruffles slide a little.
On the other hand, Zoe Saldana’s ruffles were not so easy to forgive as they were part of a dress that was supposed to be Givenchy haute but instead looked as if the designer could not decide which of three dresses to give her, so offered a combo deal.
Outside of the crepe ruffles, the dress had a crystal bustier, and a lavender satin skirt on which visually was altogether distracting and kind of made her look like she was dragging a Muppet behind her, in other words the true definition of fashion roadkill.
Of course, some celebrities could have done no wrong with their choices such as Amanda Seyfried dressed in a gown that made her look like an ice-goddess, fairy princess, and sculpted beauty reminiscent of a time when fashion meant beauty.
